The largest Glenfiddich collection in the world?

Hans-Henrik, who owns Hotel Falster in Denmark, has been collecting Glenfiddich items since September 2000.

Hans-Henrik has gathered an amazing 500 different Glenfiddich bottles! His collection also includes over 100 miniatures and other promotional items dating as far back as 1924.

Hans-Henrik fell in love with Glenfiddich when he visited our distillery in Dufftown in 2000. It is also when he bought his first bottle – a Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve. Back home in Denmark, Hans-Henrik couldn't bring himself to open it so he went and bought a second one and this is how it started...

Six years later, Hans-Henrik is the proud owner of 2 bottles of the world's oldest Single Malt – Glenfiddich 1937. However, his most precious bottle remains a 1955 Private Vintage which we bottled exclusively for him earlier this year.

As far as we know, Hans-Henrik has the largest Glenfiddich collection in the world.

From small acorns, large oak trees grow. For Hans-Henrik Hansen, that small acorn was a chance trip to the home of the world's favourite single malt Scotch whisky. The oak tree is now the world's largest private collection of Glenfiddich bottles.

With more than 400 different variants, limited editions, gift packages and vintages, Hans-Henrik truly has made every year count since he began his hobby in 2000.

It all began innocently enough for the 51 year old chef and hotelier from Nykobing Falster, Denmark. A regular drinker of blended Scotch, he joined the Dansk Malt Whisky Akademi on a trip to Scotland – his first ever trip across the North Sea – where he witnessed the inner workings of the Glenfiddich Distillery. At the end of the tour, one of his fellow travellers bought a hand-numbered Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve – a bottling of a single cask specially selected by the Glenfiddich Malt Master - complete with wooden presentation box.

The next morning, consumed with envy, Hans-Henrik awoke early and raced back to the distillery to buy his own Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve. He felt it was too expensive to open and so began the more exclusive end of his unique collection. A little time later, another Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve was released and he bought that too.

His passion has snowballed since and the impressive collection is ever-growing, with new variants, foreign language labels or unusual packaging a prime target for the shopping list. Unlike many collectors, Hans-Henrik is also a true connoisseur and will regularly open a vintage to share with friends, so long as he has a duplicate for his collection.

The most remarkable achievement has been to secure so many Glenfiddich Private Vintages, going to extraordinary lengths to make sure he acquired one bottle from each, some feat when you consider as few as 160 bottles may have ever been produced from one edition.

Indeed, his Glenfiddich Singapore 40th Anniversary 1965 Private Vintage had a remarkable journey to Denmark. As it was only available in Singapore, he asked a friend who was passing through to buy it. It then went to the US before being brought to France and then shipped to his home. Others in his collection have been acquired through more orthodox routes such as auctions, both online and live.

A recent 16m2 addition to his Glenfiddich gallery will allow him to keep adding to his collection as he hunts for two missing Private Vintage and other editions from decades ago. Anyone who can help Hans-Henrik find a Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve 1972, bottled in 2002, and a very rare six bottle edition Glenfiddich Private Vintage 1959, bottled in 2000, to celebrate William Grant & Sons winning the 1999 IWSC Distiller of the Year title, will have a very good friend for life.

Hans-Henrik lives with his girlfriend, Lone Kjellerup, and dog, Balou, in Denmark. As expected, the Hotel Falster has the complete core range of Glenfiddich should he feel like a dram of his, and the world's, favourite single malt.
